Sometimes all you need is a bit of systemised thinking.
We believe in the values of good design.
Goodhouse has been a leader in Australia’s sustainable architectural space for over 12 years. Owner and director Mark Thomas has a lifetime of experience in the design, architecture and sustainability fields. Together with practice manager Jon Hughes and graduate architect/landscape architect Eleanor Hughes (no, not related), our team has been working with good people to develop their sustainable homes, offering a regenerative approach to design and site.
Our team also consists of a number of other valuable members we have carefully gathered on the journey. Positive and efficient working relationships with our builders, consultants, specialists and suppliers are crucial as we work towards an efficient project process.
A little bit about us.
How it all began.
Goodhouse developed out of a SA State Government run competition called the Zero Carbon Challenge. Architects Mark Thomas and Oli Scholz partnered to head one of the four finalist teams consisting of Engineers, Academics, a Builder and other consultants. This competition was a huge undertaking that forced an engagement with carbon accounting, embodied energy, operational energy, material selection, systems and processes all with a limited budget. The main aim of the competition was to encourage teams to challenge the traditional craft based construction industry in Australia, offering something more appropriate and ultimately more sustainable.
After this competition Goodhouse was launched on Sustainable House Day in 2012. Mark’s house was opened as the venue and had over 1000 visitors through demonstrating that many people are looking for good value, sustainable housing.
What we do.
Our team believe that we must act on our values. Along with our own personal actions, we highly value working with the ASBN (Adelaide Sustainable Building Network) through sponsorship, volunteering and speaking at events. Eleanor is chair of a community emissions reduction group, Mission Possible, based in the City of Charles Sturt. And, all employees are supplied with a company vehicle... a bike!
“What a (good)house. We love it! Thank you for being a huge part in helping us deign and create our family home. You and your team’s advice, care and guidance throughout the whole process has been exceptional.”
“Incredible personal service with an attention to detail. Mark and his team are superb. offering a pallete of design that is unique to the market and provide quality solutions that will age timelessly! We are very thankful to be Goodhouse customers :)”
“We built in 2021. From the very beginning Mark understood what we hoped to achieve to take advantage of the beautiful views that we have on our rural property. The first concept plan was pretty much what we decided on. Under his supervision the build went very smoothly, and we are very happy with our new home. The under-floor heating and cooling is truly wonderful.”
“I’m lucky enough to live in a Goodhouse and I can’t recommend their expert services enough. Not only are they forging a new path in sustainable housing for South Australians, they are a pleasure to work with and were professional from start to finish. In the end, they felt like family. If you plan on building, do the right thing and build a home that will positively impact our community and planet, the Goodhouse way.”
“We went the full journey with Goodhouse, from design to build, and love our home.”
